Hello and welcome to Birding with Leslie!
I am a passionate backyard birder, bluebird landlord, native plant enthusiast, and an aspiring photographer —but above all, I’m a bird lover through and through.
I live in a Northern Virginia suburb, just 45 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. I’ve been feeding birds since April 2023, and I was beyond excited to welcome 2024 as I took on a new role as a bluebird landlord.
In my first year with nest boxes, I am proud to share that 13 baby bluebirds have been successfully raised in my yard since May 2024..
Eastern Bluebirds
1st brood (5) eggs hatched May 20, 2024 - (1) baby fledged ~7pm on 6/6/24 and the last (4) babies fledged between 8:30-9:30am the next day on 6/7/24 (16 and 17 days to fledge)
2nd brood (4) eggs total. 2 hatched on 7/23 and 2 hatched on 7/24. (1) baby fledged in the evening on 8/9/24 and the last (3) fledged between 4:30-5:30pm on 8/10/24
I believe this is the momma bluebird’s 3rd brood. I did not clean her old nest right away after the fledglings left so I believe she nested somewhere else for the 2nd brood & then came back to her original nest box in my yard for this brood.
Egg Laying: July 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th (1 egg per day)
Incubation: Started July 11th (Lasted 12 days) during the heatwave 2024 (12-14 days is the norm)
Hatching: 1st 2 eggs hatched on July 23, 3rd & 4th egg hatched on July 24th
Fledging: 2 two eggs took 17 days to fledge and the last 2 eggs took 18 days to fledge - (16-21 days with 17-18 days as the norm)
Carolina Wrens
